MAINTAIN A SERVICE CONTRACT

FINANCIAL INCENTIVES

When an underground tank or pipe leaks, the cleanup can cost $20,000 or more, and if your homeowner's insurance policy contains a "pollution exclusion" clause, which many do, you could get stuck with the bill. Financial incentives for tank removal are available from the Town of East Hampton in the form of a $500 or $700 cash rebates. The program offers $500 for removing or properly disabling a buried tank, and an additional $200 if the replacement tank is installed in the basement on a concrete surface. (New buried tanks, or above-ground tanks are not eligible for the $200 additional incentive).

PROPER INSULATION AND VENTILATION

To help against the buildup of ice on your roof, its important to have the proper amount of insulation and ventilation to prevent heat loss. If you don't have enough insulation in your attic (R-49 is recommended by the Government) the heat from inside the home will rise and melt the bottom layer of snow on your roof. This will turn the snow to ice and start to form an ice dam.

Equally important is ventilation in the attic area. The attic must breathe and allow the moist air from the home to escape. This is accomplished by the use of soffit, ridge, roof and/or gable vents. Its important that the airflow from the soffit vent is unobstructed. The temperature in the attic should be the same as the outside air.

WATER DAMAGE

If you do have water damage caused by a burst pipe, wind-blown rain or an ice dam, its important to act immediately to protect your home from severe damage.

Immediately call a professional water extraction company to remove the water and dry out the affected area with special fans and de-humidifiers. Then call us to do follow-up work and also notify your insurance agent at the same time.

WINTERIZING YOUR HOME

Protect your home and seasonal property from frozen pipes and potential water damage by maintaining your heat at 55 degrees or higher, or having your pipes drained by our plumbers before you leave. We can also put anti-freeze in toilets and other fixtures. Allow warm air to get under sinks and in crawl spaces where pipes are located. If you discover a frozen pipe, use a hair dryer to warm the frozen area instead of a blow torch or open flame.

HEAP

The Federal Government funds a program called HEAP which provides one-time assistance. This is administered by the local Social Services office at 631-854-9700. The HEAP Hotline 1-800-342-3009.

SUFFOLK HEAP (SHEAP)

Suffolk HEAP, the Home Energy Assistance Program, provides energy assistance to low income and elderly households. HEAP is a seasonal program that starts in November and runs until the money is exhausted. Visit the SHEAP website for more information and application forms.

Project Warmth, Long Island’s Energy Fund, has been administered by United Way of Long Island for the past 12 years. Project Warmth major sponsors are KeySpan and The KeySpan Foundation. LIPA is also a lead sponsor. Project Warmth is an opportunity for Long Islanders to help others in their communities who have heating emergencies and have nowhere else to turn. Project Warmth truly helps these families get back on track with their utility payments. Project Warmth also helps the families connect with other local resources that can lead to permanent solutions to their financial difficulties, including budget/debt counseling, supplemental food programs or job training services.  The local application office is at 200 Pantigo Rd., East Hampton, NY (631-329-2429).
